The Next Right Thing!
As we wait on Election results today, there is some palpable
anxiety in the air. On social media, on the news, as we talk to co-workers,
friends, and family…people on both sides of the aisle, and even some of the ones
in the middle, all feel a sense of unsettle. As a people of God, and as those
who work at an organization whose mission is to bring care and healing to those
facing difficulty, what is our response?
To quote the famous political leader Princess Anna of Arendelle,
as she sings to us in Frozen 2, “Do the next right thing.” “I
won’t look too far ahead, it’s too much for me to take, but break it down to
this next breath, this next step, this next choice is one that I can make.”
We see this same idea in Scripture, as well. I am reminded
of Micah 6:8—“Do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God.” Living
out this verse is what we can do for the Kingdom today. The next right step is
what we can do today. Continue loving others, continue your healing work,
continue relationships with justice, mercy, and humility.
As results continue to come in over the next days, strong
feelings are going to continue, and it is important that we remain those people
who show the love of God above all else. The next right thing may look like putting
a family member’s needs above your own, taking on an extra task for a coworker,
holding your tongue, turning off the news for a bit, or finding something
positive in someone you disagree with. It may also just include getting up,
going to work, doing your job well, and then caring for yourself. Whatever the
next right thing is for you, I pray that you do it today, because God has
empowered you for the steps you need to take today!
